The city of Konz is foregoing many noise barriers along the railway line.

The Konz city council decided on Tuesday evening regarding the possible construction of noise barriers along the railway line. The federal government would finance this measure as part of a noise abatement program. Therefore, Deutsche Bahn had conducted preliminary planning to determine which sections of track within the city limits would be suitable for implementing noise barriers.

However, through numerous discussions with residents, the council members concluded that most of those affected did not want the walls. Aesthetic reasons were frequently cited.

Therefore, the city council has only given the green light for one wall: This is a three-meter-high wall along the L137 (connection Konzer Saarstraße to Filzen), which is intended to protect Könen from train noise.

The city council only approved a large wall on the condition that it could be shortened. This concerned a three-meter-high wall along the tracks on Granastraße, which, according to the council's wishes, should only be built in the section between the railway bridge over the Saar River and the Konz Mitte train station. The railway company is to investigate whether a shortened wall is feasible and makes sense from a noise abatement perspective.

The federal government's noise abatement program offers not only noise barriers in public spaces but also other options to protect residents from train noise. Homeowners in certain designated areas can receive subsidies for passive measures, such as soundproof windows.
