Commemoration on Remembrance Day 2023 in Konz

To commemorate the victims of war and acts of violence Memorial Day, November 19, 2023 , a memorial service took place in the city of Konz. The ceremony begins at 12.00 p.m. at the “Auf dem Sprung” memorial in Konz and is ceremoniously organized by students from the Konz high school. The Concordia Konz music association provides the musical setting. The event ends with the ceremonial wreath-laying by the VdK Konz local association and the Konz volunteer fire department.

The public is cordially invited to take part in the memorial service.

Background knowledge:

The Volkstrauertag (People's Day of Mourning) was introduced as a day of remembrance for the war dead of the First World War at the suggestion of the German War Graves Commission, founded in 1919. This day was intended to be a sign of solidarity between those who had no loss and the bereaved of those who died.

After the Second World War, Remembrance Day in West Germany was reintroduced as a day of “national mourning” in 1952 at the instigation of the German War Graves Commission, in clear contrast to the National Socialist commemoration of heroes. It is protected by state law and occurs on the Sunday two weeks before the first Advent. Today, on Remembrance Day, we remember the victims of war and violence and at the same time call for reconciliation, understanding and peace.
