City Library Konz: Promotion of reading despite the pandemic

City Library Konz: Promotion of reading despite the pandemic - Livia Peterzelka wins the regional decision in the 2021/22 reading competition

Konz, February 16, 2022

The jury has decided: Livia Peterzelka is the best reader in the district of Trier-Saarburg. She is one of the 555 best readers in Germany, who will now continue reading at the district level.

The regional decision of the 63rd reading competition of the German book trade was organized by the city library of Konz. As in the previous year, the competition met the pandemic conditions flexibly so that it can continue despite Corona: The seven school winners in the district (Paul Brosius from the Realschule Plus Saarburg, Maurice Cauchois from the Realschule Plus Konz, Charlotte-Maria Keßler from the Realschule Plus Kell am See , Emma Penth from SAG Schweich, Livia Peterzelka from Gymnasium Saarburg, Tobias Walter from IGS Hermeskeil and Nikolas Weber from SAG Schweich) were able to record their reading as a video by February 20 and upload it via the competition portal. The jury, consisting of Elisabeth Kurzmann (Head of the Konz City Library), Marion Adams (Head of the Hermeskeil City Library), Kordula Kreitz-Brausch (“Die Buchhändler, Schweich) and last year’s winner Emma Munsch Pais, viewed and evaluated all the video contributions submitted.

This year, more than 6,000 school winners nationwide entered the reading aloud decisions of the cities and districts. All participating children receive a certificate and a special edition of "The universe is damn big and super mystical" by Lisa Krusche (Beltz). All winners of the city and district decisions will also receive a copy of "Calypsos Irrfahrt" by Cornelia Franz (Carlsen). A total of 480,000 children took part in the 63rd reading competition. This brings the competition almost to the level of a pre-Corona year.

The reading competition, which has been taking place since 1959, is one of the largest school competitions in Germany. It is organized by the Book Culture and Reading Promotion Foundation of the German Book Trade Association and is under the patronage of the Federal President. The competition is intended to bring enthusiasm for books to the public, arouse the joy of reading and strengthen children's reading skills. The Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth supports the reading competition. Also this year, four Sparda regional banks are supporting the campaign.

The stages lead from school to city/district, district and state level to the national final, which will take place on June 21, 2022 in Berlin. The 555 regional (city/county) competitions are organized by bookshops, libraries, schools or other cultural institutions.
