The ID card with online ID function can be applied for since November 1st, 2010.

The previous identity card is valid until the end of the entered period of validity.

Please note that the facial appearance, especially of infants and small children, can change so much within six years that identification with the original identification document is sometimes impossible This is no longer possible well before the printed end of validity is reached and the identification document is therefore prematurely invalid . In this case, please apply for a new document (identity card or passport) in good time before departure.

Necessary documents

• the current identity card or valid (child) passport or birth certificate
• a current passport photo suitable for biometrics (according to the photo template)
• if necessary, further documents (e.g. birth or marriage certificate) are required for a one-off check of the spelling of the name. More information is available from the Citizens' Office
• If you apply before the age of 16, one of your parents must also sign the application. Because of the need to sign, you must appear in person when submitting the application. The minor must be present when the application is made. In addition, the written consent to the application for the identity document of the other parent must be presented together with a copy of their identity card. (Declaration of consent see p. costs

• EUR 37.00 for applicants aged 24 and over
• EUR 22.80 for applicants under the age of 24
• EUR 10.00 for the provisional identity card
