Residence deregistration
service description
If you move out of an apartment and do not move into another apartment in Germany, you must deregister.
The most important cases are moving abroad or deregistering a secondary residence.
If you move within Germany, you do not have to deregister. All you have to do is register with your new municipality.
requirements
In the case of persons under the age of 16, care must be taken to ensure that they are de-registered by the persons whose apartment they are moving out of.
What documents are required?
- Identity card or passport if the person subject to registration has reached the age of 16
- Personal documents of the family members who are deregistered together on a deregistration form
- for children: children's passport or birth certificate
The competent authority may request the submission of further documents that serve to prove the information (e.g. marriage certificate).
If you send the completed registration form for deregistration by post to the responsible office, enclose a copy of the personal documents for you and all family members who are to be deregistered. What fees apply?
No.
If you do not comply with your obligation to deregister or do not do so in good time, you are committing an administrative offense that can be punished with a fine.
What deadlines do I need to consider?
You must deregister within 2 weeks of moving out of the apartment. You can deregister in the week before you move out of the apartment.
legal basis
What else should I know?
You can deregister either in person (appointment at the Citizens Advice Bureau) or in writing. Once you have deregistered, you will receive a confirmation of deregistration.
