"Democracy and international law: renew or dismantle?"

"Democracy and international law: renew or dismantle?"

International law and democracy are widely regarded as achievements of modern societies, but it is increasingly argued that in their current form they no longer meet the challenges of the 21st century. Both international law and democracy, it is said, are in crisis. Not only is international law being effectively suspended, but parliamentary democracy is also under pressure. International law and democracy require renewal, but this is highly controversial and contested. Against this backdrop, the Political Salon Concert in his next Event on May 31st the question of what perspectives are emerging, particularly for international law.

With woman Prof. Dr. Antje von Ungern-Sternberg A renowned expert from the University of Trier was secured to introduce this difficult and complex topic and provide an introduction. Her presentation is entitled “International law – sufficiently legitimate, sufficiently enforceable?” The ensuing discussion will address, among other things, whether international law and democracy are intrinsically linked. Must international law be legitimized by national populations, and must national law be secured through international recognition? To what extent are freedom and security, both nationally and regionally, based on international law? To what extent is peace secured and promoted by democracy? How can we influence the further development of democracy and international law at the local level to prevent their eventual erosion?

The event will take place on May 31st – starting as always at 11 am – in the Concert-Doctor-Citizens' Hall at Wiltinger Straße 10-12 The event will take place in Konz. We expect another lively and engaging discussion on these fundamental questions, both during the official event and afterwards in the informal part over a glass of wine or sparkling water.

The offer is supported by the Partnership for Democracy in the VG Konz and funded by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth as part of the federal program "Democracy Live!".
