Larger tank farm in the port of Mertert?
The tank farm in the port of Mertert is to be expanded. The municipality of Konz and the local community of Temmels have received several folders of approval documents for the project. Specifically, these concern a Expansion of the tank farm for diesel, gasoline and kerosene from 60,000 cubic meters by 90,000 cubic meters.
The documents are available to the administration in paper form; unfortunately, the risk study is only available in French. The documents can be viewed in the Building Authority (Max-Planck-Straße 1) The documents can be viewed. Please make an appointment by telephone with Mr. Queins or Mr. Gerards at: 06501 83-181/180. Comments can be submitted until December 18, 2025. participation@konz.de to be handed in.

Statement from the municipal administration regarding the planned project:
"Increasing the tank farm's capacity will exacerbate existing risks. We therefore reject any expansion of the facility! In our view, the distance to residential areas in Temmels is far too short and poses a danger to the population. This is not just about noise pollution and the potential oil spill into the Moselle River. We are particularly concerned about a possible tank farm fire and the resulting heat. The urgent question arises whether there are suitable emergency plans in place that can be implemented promptly and effectively in the event of an accident."
In our view, the expansion of the tank farm would severely restrict Temmels' planning authority. Furthermore, we question the purpose of creating more storage capacity in times of energy transition and declining gasoline and oil consumption.
We are in close contact with the Luxembourg municipalities that would be affected by an expansion in order to coordinate a common approach.”
