Konstantinstraße 50 is being completely renovated: Search for alternative premises

Demolition or complete renovation? – This question has been resolved after many years of political debate. The Verbandsgemeindewerke Konz AöR (Konz Municipal Utilities Association) will take over the building at Konstantinstraße 50 (the former Zettelmeyer administration building) at the end of the year and begin renovating it in 2026.

This is urgently needed: In recent years, the building's age and fire safety problems have meant that the building, constructed in 1969, can only be used with restrictions. For example, only 30 people are allowed in the city library at one time.

The starting date for the renovation has not yet been determined. Detailed planning for the project is underway. One thing is certain: it is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026, and the extensive construction work is expected to take at least two years. In addition to an interior renovation, the entire facade will also be renovated.

As important as this decision and renovation is, it presents the city of Konz, as the current owner of the building, and the tenants with major challenges. They must search for alternative premises. In principle, the users and tenants should be able to remain at Konstantinstraße 50 for as long as possible. However, an early search for alternative premises makes sense, as the city's space capacity—including for clubs—is currently limited, partly due to the renovation of the St. Bruno Monastery in Karthaus until 2027.

Konstantinstraße 50 is the location of the city library. Due to renovations, the library is temporarily relocating to Administration Building II on the market square. The administration is currently preparing construction plans to make this possible. Administrative staff who currently have their offices there will move to premises at Volvo in Konz-Könen.

The Caritas Association of Trier and the Catholic parish of Konz also use many of the spaces at Konstantinstraße 50. The "Kleiderladen & Mehr" (Clothes Shop & More) and, since April 2022, the Tafel (food bank) are also affected. At the time, the Tafel was urgently looking for accommodation because its lease at Karthaus had expired. The city therefore quickly provided it with an interim solution on Konstantinstraße. The adult education center (VHS) is also housed in the building.

The "Clothing Store & More" is currently seeking approximately 250 square meters, while the food bank needs approximately 180 square meters for a kitchen, storage, and lounge. The two organizations would prefer a shared location. In addition to an office (45 square meters or more), the adult education center needs at least two, ideally three classrooms (one 36 square meters and two 80 square meters), for a total of approximately 240 square meters. The city is currently reviewing availability at its properties for small alternative storage space for clubs.

The city of Konz would like to assist in the search and therefore asks owners of properties with suitable areas to contact rathaus@konz.de The administration will then forward the offered premises and contacts to the responsible persons of the Caritas Association, the Catholic parish, and the Adult Education Center in Konz.
