Commemoration of National Day of Mourning 2022

To commemorate the victims of war and violence, Memorial Day, November 13, 2022 , a memorial service was held in the city of Konz. The celebration begins at 12.00 p.m. at the memorial “On the Jump” in Konz and is ceremoniously co-designed by students from the Realschule Plus Konz. The music club Concordia Konz provides the musical framework. The event ends with the festive wreath-laying ceremony by the VdK local association Konz and the Konz volunteer fire brigade.

To the background:

The Volkstrauertag (People's Day of Mourning) was introduced as a day of remembrance for the war dead of the First World War at the suggestion of the German War Graves Commission, founded in 1919. This day was intended to be a sign of solidarity between those who had no loss and the bereaved of those who died.

After the Second World War, the national mourning day in West Germany was reintroduced in 1952 as a day of "national mourning" at the instigation of the German War Graves Commission, in clear adjacency to the National Socialist heroes' commemoration. It is protected by state law and falls on the Sunday two weeks before the first Advent. Today, on the day of national mourning, the victims of war and violence are commemorated and at the same time reconciliation, understanding and peace are called for.
