    If you have received a voting notification but cannot or do not want to vote in person in your constituency on election day, you can request voting documents for postal voting. These contain the ballot paper.

    The election notification tells you where to apply for the documents for postal voting.

    If you are unable to use the designated polling station due to a disability, you can also apply for a ballot paper.

    If you pick up your ballot and postal voting documents in person from the city or municipal administration, you have the option of casting your vote there and then. The administration will ensure that you can mark your ballot paper and place it in the ballot envelope without being observed.

    You can apply for your ballot paper as follows:

    • You go to the city or municipal administration in person and pick up the ballot paper there,
    • You submit a written application – use the form on the back of the voting notification,
    • You apply for the ballot paper electronically, provided that your city or municipality offers such a procedure (online application, e-mail),
    • You ask a representative who has your written authorization to collect the documents for you.

    It is not possible to submit an application by telephone.

    • You are entitled to vote in the election in question and are registered in the electoral roll.
    • If you are applying for someone else: You must provide a written power of attorney.
  • What documents are required?

    • personal data (name, date of birth, address)
    • Written power of attorney if a third person is to submit the application for you or receive your documents
  • What fees apply?

    There are no costs involved.

  • What deadlines do I need to consider?

    You will receive your voting notification no later than 3 weeks before election day. If you have not received it in time, please contact your city or municipal administration.

    As a rule, you must apply for the ballot paper no later than two days before election day, 6 p.m.

    The postal voting documents must be received by the municipality no later than 6:00 p.m. on election day.

    If you have applied for a ballot but never received it, you can get a new ballot until 12:00 noon the day before election day. To do so, contact your city or municipal administration.

    You submit the application for the ballot paper to the office indicated on the election notification. Another person can submit the application for you or receive your documents if you authorize them in writing.

  • What else should I know?

    If you are unable to cast your postal vote alone due to a physical disability or reading and writing difficulties, another person may help you. Your assistant must

    • be at least 16 years old and
    • confirm by an affirmation under oath that the ballot paper was marked according to your declared wishes.
