When the siren sounds, attention is required.

Around 30 existing sirens in the Konz municipality will be upgraded in the coming weeks. New siren control receivers will enable them to sound a warning signal to the public in case of danger.

Previously, the sirens in the municipality could only be used to alert fire departments. Following the severe rainstorm in the Ahr Valley, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate decided that the sirens throughout the state should be technically upgraded to change this. Implementation was delayed because the digital alerting network in the Trier control center area first had to be fully completed. Now the upgrade can take place.

The technical upgrade will make it possible to warn residents quickly and over a wide area in the event of acute dangers – such as floods, major fires, or hazardous material releases. The siren signal draws attention to the situation and prompts people to seek further information through official channels.

At the same time, the system for alerting volunteer fire departments is being changed. In the future, emergency responders will be alerted via digital radio pagers – quietly, selectively, and without using the public siren network. The aim is to clarify the importance of the siren for the public: when it sounds, there is a concrete emergency.

In addition, the volunteer fire departments continue to use mobile warning systems that can be flexibly installed on the vehicles.
