Saar between Serrig and Konz is a certified canoe paradise
Beautiful river scenery and excellent tourist infrastructure make the Saar River between Serrig and Konz a paradise for canoeists. Anyone who has ever completed a tour along this route knows this. But now it's officially confirmed, as the German Canoe Association (Bundesverband Kanu e.V.) has designated the Saar River from the Serrig barrage (km 18) to the Saar estuary in Konz (km 0) as a certified canoeing water for the next three years.
The certification process was initiated and commissioned by Saar-Obermosel Tourism. "We want to provide an important impetus for the quality development of water tourism in the region," explains Jürgen Dixius, Mayor of the Saarburg-Kell municipality. "The certification will strengthen the supra-regional visibility of the offering and promote the sustainable development of the region."
During the certification process, Saar-Obermosel-Touristik worked closely with the qualified canoe operator "KanuSaarFari." Key criteria of the "Water Tourism Quality Management" include paved entry and exit points, information boards, rest areas, and route signage, which guide tourism while simultaneously promoting the experience of nature.
"The certified day trip is suitable for both beginners and experienced canoeists," says Stefanie Koch, Managing Director of Saar-Obermosel-Touristik. "With its manageable length of 20 kilometers, it's manageable for everyone, but never gets boring with all its scenic and cultural highlights."
In the Saarburg administrative district, highlights include Germany's highest river barrage in Serrig and the impressive waterfall in Saarburg. And in the Konz administrative district lies the section of the river that many consider the most scenic: the Wiltinger Saarbogen, a natural bend in the Saar River.
"For canoeists, this area is special not only because of its idyllic floodplains, but also because of its lively rapids," emphasizes Guido Wacht, the full-time councilor of the Konz municipality. "With this certification, our region is a pioneer, as there is only one other river nationwide where a canoeing region has also been awarded this certification."
