Cross-border "no" to planned tank farm expansion
The tank farm in the port of Mertert, in the district of Grevenmacher (L), is to be expanded. This has met with fierce cross-border protest in the municipalities of Grevenmacher, Mertert, Temmels, Konz (VG), Oberbillig and Wellen.
Due to the plans, the mayors met on Friday for a constructive working meeting at Konz Town Hall. They discussed, among other things, legal aspects and talked about ways to vehemently oppose the project.
Currently, some of the arguments and ideas raised at the meeting are being reviewed and prepared, including by external experts. The municipalities will then comment on the construction project in detail at a later date.
The mayors want to send a clear message right now. In a joint, cross-border declaration, they say a resounding "no" to the planned expansion of the tank farm: They fear dangers and burdens for citizens on both sides of the Moselle River. Furthermore, they criticize the fact that the project seems to have suddenly resurfaced without warning and is now so urgent that the municipalities are given hardly any time to thoroughly examine the issue.
In the 2010s, an expansion of the tank farm at that location had already been under discussion. At that time, widespread, cross-border opposition formed. Since 2019, the plans had gone quiet.

The participation is being carried out by the Luxembourg Ministry of the Environment, and in parallel by the Luxembourg Ministry of Transport. Comments can be submitted until December 18, 2025 to participation@konz.de to be handed in.
