“In the Shadow of the Vineyards: Jewish Life in Wawern on the Saar 1712–1951”
On May 20, the new exhibition "In the Shadow of the Vineyards: Jewish Life in Wawern on the Saar 1712–1951" was officially opened. Numerous interested guests attended to learn about the moving history of Jewish life in Wawern and gain insight into the past.
Wawern on the Saar was the center of Jewish life in the region until 1938. With the Nazis' rise to power, most of the Jewish residents left the town, marking the end of an important community. This exhibition sets an important example of how to prevent the loss of memory and commemorates the people who lived here.
The exhibition was developed by Dr. Pascale Eberhard, chairwoman of the Gedenken & Gestalten association, together with students from various schools in Germany and abroad. It will be on display until June 20, 2025, and can be visited now during the opening hours of the city library:
- Tuesday: 3–7 p.m.
- Wednesday: 10am–6pm
- Thursday: 3–6 p.m.
- Friday: 10am–12pm and 3pm–6pm
- 1st Saturday of the month: 10am–1pm
The exhibition is funded as part of the federal program "Living Democracy!" We cordially invite all interested parties to visit the exhibition and explore the history of Jewish life in Wawern.
