Karthaus Monastery is being upgraded for tourism

Konz: Monastery of St. Bruno in Karthaus is being upgraded for tourism - barrier-free circular route, listening tour and bicycle park

Konz, April 1st, 2022

The new tourist season is about to start. Visitors can experience the monastery in Konz-Karthaus in new, attractive ways this year.

For example, the new barrier-free circular path around the entire monastery building is finished. This means that wheelchair users can also visit the complex without any problems and the dimensions of the monastery and church can be better experienced by everyone.

"We are happy if barrier-free offers like this one make it possible for even more visitors to see the attractions of Konz," says Mayor Joachim Weber. "Here, visitors can not only see the monastery, but also hear it," he emphasizes, referring to the new listening tour.

Those who are interested can follow a 10-minute audio tour with the "Laugh Tour App", which can be downloaded free of charge from the App Store or Google Play. “It starts at the large portal at the front of the monastery. The smartphone navigates through the tour via GPS and the app automatically triggers the appropriate story about the area,” explains Stefanie Koch from Saar-Obermosel-Touristik. The tourist information has designed the tour together with the company Lauschtour from Mainz. The listening tour encourages you to take a closer look and tells the history of the monastery in an interesting and entertaining way. Important background knowledge was provided by the local expert Rudolf Molter, who also has his say personally during the tour. The listeners learn from him, for example, what "grimace heads" are and why the bell tower of the church is so small.

The new connecting path and the listening tour are part of the project "History and culture in Konz - experience barrier-free". The new attractions cost around 80,000 euros and were funded by the EU from the European Regional Development Fund and the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

But there is not only barrier-free news at the monastery. A bicycle parking space in the inner courtyard now makes it easier for visitors who are traveling by bicycle to park their means of transport. "The monastery in Karthaus is an excellent stopover on a bike tour along the Moselle," emphasizes Mayor Weber. "Therefore, such a bicycle parker should be understood as a small gesture that should say: Dear cyclists, you are very welcome here in Konz."
