Registration of deaths

The death certificate is an official document that certifies the death of a person. The certificate is mandatory in Germany and the most important document for all formalities after a death. The Konz registry office is responsible for notarizing a death if the death occurred in our community.

Relatives of the deceased need several copies of the certificate, for example for the funeral, health insurance, statutory pension insurance, bank, tax office, payment from life insurance and for applying for a certificate of inheritance from the probate court. A copy of the death certificate is usually sufficient to cancel household and car insurance, mobile phone and electricity contracts and memberships in clubs.

The following documents are required:

  • The marriage or civil partnership certificate of the last marriage or civil partnership and, if applicable, proof of its dissolution,
  • birth certificate
  • proof of last place of residence,
  • a medical certificate of death.

According to the Rhineland-Palatinate Burial Act, corpses must be buried or cremated within 7 days. A death certificate is required to be submitted.

The city of Konz and the local communities within the Verbandsgemeinde offer the bereaved and relatives a selection of different types of graves, which have been adapted to the wishes of the deceased, the bereaved and the changed burial culture.
