Preventing rat infestations - information and tips for citizens

Rats can pose health risks and will settle wherever they find sufficient food and hiding places. The municipality of Konz is therefore providing information on effective preventative measures and who is responsible in the event of a rat infestation.

  • Rats sighted – what to do?

    If you repeatedly observe rats on your property, you should take immediate preventative and control measures. Inform your neighbors as well to prevent further spread.

    Important: Control measures on private property are the responsibility of the property owner and must be borne by the owner. Tenants should first contact their landlords.

    Pest control should only be carried out by qualified pest control companies using approved methods. Contact information for local pest control companies can be found online or in the Yellow Pages.

  • Here's how you can prevent rats

    They offer no food sources

    ✅ Always keep garbage cans closed; do not store garbage bags next to them.
    ✅ Store yellow bags in a protected place and only put them out shortly before collection.
    ✅ Do not dispose of food scraps down the toilet or drain.
    ✅ Do not put food scraps on the compost heap
    ✅ Store pet food only in sealed containers

    ✅ Do not leave pet food bowls outside after feeding.
    ✅ Do not feed wild animals (e.g., pigeons or ducks).

    Avoid hiding places

    ✅ Remove piles of wood, junk and rubbish
    ✅ Keep garden sheds, cellars and outbuildings tidy
    ✅ Regularly trim hedges, bushes and ground cover

    Secure buildings

    ✅ Seal off any openings in doors and walls
    ✅ Secure basement windows and ventilation shafts with close-meshed grilles
    ✅ Seal doors, gates and openings
    ✅ Regularly check sanitary facilities and wastewater systems

  • When should an authority be informed?

    The fundamental responsibility in the event of a rat infestation outside your own property (!) is at District administration Trier-Saarburg. It will act in accordance with Section 17 Paragraph 2 of the Infection Protection Act (IfSG) if a significant health risk to the general public consists.

    The departments of the city or VG Konz combat rat infestations in public areas and on public land. They do not carry out pest control on private property. Saar-Mosel Werke is taking action against rodents in the public sewer network.

    The municipality of Konz should be informed if:

    • public Streets, paths, playgrounds or parking lots are affected
    • the infestation probably originated from the public Sewer originates
