Maria Laach Abbey and the deepest beer cellar in the world

The action group “Lifelong learning, actively passing on knowledge” explored the Maria Laach monastery and the deepest beer cellar in the world.

On April 15, 2026, 48 people set off for Lake Laach and the Maria Laach Abbey. In perfect spring weather, they enjoyed a pleasant walk, learning about the historical background and gaining fascinating insights into the Benedictine abbey. Hidden within the cloistered walls is the enchanting library, built in 1865, containing some 260,000 works, which is normally closed to the public. After a delicious lunch in the abbey's restaurant, the participants had ample time to explore the abbey's own garden, workshops, bookstore, and a shop selling traditional crafts. Some sought peace and relaxation in the abbey church or on the shores of Lake Laach. Afterwards, there was an opportunity to explore the world's deepest beer cellar, the Vulkan Brewery in Mendig, on a guided tour. They descended into the deepest storage and fermentation cellars in the world (153 steps, 30 meters underground). Two hundred years ago, 29 different breweries stored their beers in this fascinating location. On the way home, everyone saw happy faces and agreed once again that "lifelong learning" is both educational and enjoyable.
