United in diversity - visit to the EU Parliament in Strasbourg

As part of the series of events "United in diversity - discovering and understanding Europe", the partnership for democracy in the VG Konz, in cooperation with the "Lifelong Learning" action group, organized an educational trip to the European Parliament in Strasbourg last Thursday, October 6th, 2022.

The European Parliament is the only directly elected body of the European Union and therefore the voice of all Europeans. Despite this, the institutions of the EU remain an abstract entity for many, and only very few know anything concrete about their exact tasks and organization.

During the visit to the European Parliament, the groups not only received an interesting lecture on the powers of the legislature and the role of Parliament in the legislative process at EU level, but were also able to put their questions directly to the Vice President of Parliament, Dr. Katarina Barley, and find out about her parliamentary work.

After the meeting, they went to the visitors' gallery of the plenary hall, where the participants could follow the course of the plenary session live in the exciting atmosphere of the largest transnational parliament in the world. In order to further deepen the knowledge of the European Parliament, the permanent interactive exhibition 'parlamentarium Simone Veil' in the futuristic premises of the Louise Weiss building was visited before continuing to the city center of Strasbourg.

After a lunch break, the participants explored the picturesque old town of Strasbourg as part of a city tour and learned exciting details about the eventful history of the Alsatian Rhine metropolis.

The series of events is organized by the coordination and specialist office of the Partnership for Democracy in the VG Konz and funded by the Federal Ministry for Families, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth as part of the federal program "Live Democracy!"
