City and municipality of Konz

Verbandsgemeinde Konz

Konz - Modern medium-sized center on the Saar and Moselle

SURROUNDED BY BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPE, CULTURE AND WINE

Verbandsgemeinde focuses on the development of attractive residential areas and promotes commercial settlements, viticulture and tourism

Viticulture, trade and tourism: These are three pillars on which the economic power of the Konz municipality is based. While other associated municipalities are noticing falling population figures, the city and associated municipality of Konz is one of the few in Rhineland-Palatinate that can still report growth rates. The result: Economically and culturally a lot has happened in one of the largest municipalities in Rhineland-Palatinate in recent years.

Beautifully scenic - situated on the Moselle and Saar - the Konz association of municipalities covers an area of 130 km². On the left and right of the Saar and on the German side of the Upper Moselle, 11 communities - Kanzem, Nittel, Oberbillig, Onsdorf, Pellingen, Tawern, Temmels, Wasserliesch, Wawern, Wellen, Wiltingen - and the urban center of Konz with around 32,754 people form a wine and vacation area, which has always been a coveted travel destination. Many tourists make intensive use of the exemplary 210 km cycle path network.

Geographically, the administrative area includes the northern parts of the Upper Moselle and the Saargau, the estuary of the Saar, the so-called "Konzer Tälchen" and the high forest community of Pellingen. In the south and east it borders on the municipalities of Saarburg, Kell and Ruwer as well as on the exclave of Franzenheim / Hockweiler in the municipality of Trier-Land. Northern neighbors are the city of Trier and the municipality of Trier-Land. In the west, between Oberbillig and Nittel, the Moselle river forms the border with neighboring Luxembourg. "Not only do we have good neighborly and friendly relations with the neighboring country of Luxembourg, but also a common history, culture and intensive cross-border cooperation in many areas," says City and Association Mayor Joachim Weber.

Economically, the municipality of Konz relies on the following pillars: viticulture, trade/commerce/industry, services and tourism. Viticulture in the region has a very long tradition. The Celts and Romans planted their vines here 2000 years ago. Although the grape varieties of that time had little in common with today's prevailing Riesling or Elbling, a certain wine culture was already cultivated. This was certainly one of the reasons why the Roman Emperor Constantine had his imperial palace built in Konz in the fourth century AD. The remains of the wall are still visible today. In addition, display boards and a metal sculpture provide an overview of the extent of the former Roman palace complex.

The ice wines and Trockenbeerenauslese from the Moselle and Saar are among the most expensive specialties in the world. Many innovative and quality-conscious winegrowers contribute to the fact that the image of the wines from the Moselle and Saar wins new splendor. This is all the more important as the management of the steep slopes is more complex than in almost any other growing area.

The medium-sized companies in the areas of trade, crafts and trade are just as characteristic as the wine for the VG Konz. For this purpose, many infrastructural improvements were made by the municipalities and new commercial areas were also identified - partly in cooperation with the special-purpose association "Wirtschaftsförderung im Trierer Tal". The commercial and industrial area "Saarmündung" should be mentioned here as an example. A new hardware store and a new shopping center were built there. a food discounter, an electronics store, a specialist store for pet supplies and a textile discounter. Likewise, the city center was further strengthened. The plans to build a shopping and health center on Koksijder Platz took concrete form and resulted in a further revitalization of the center.

But Konz and the surrounding area also offer all imaginable leisure activities in terms of tourism. The Saar-Obermosel-Touristik, in cooperation with the Saarschleife-Touristik and the Tourist-Info Merzig, organizes the car-free cycling experience day "Saarpedal" between Konz and Merzig.

From the maintenance of village and rural customs to numerous concerts, theater events, celebrations pp. the citizens and guests are presented with a rich offer by the city and the local communities. One of the highlights is certainly the local heritage and wine festival that takes place every year on the 3rd weekend in July on the market square in Konz.

The course was set early on for one of the most important sports and leisure projects in the Konz association: the construction of a new swimming pool in the town of Konz "Saar-Moselle-Bad" was implemented at the site of the former bath and stands for sport, fitness and health.

The councils and administration are breaking new ground when it comes to forming opinions: With a large number of participatory projects, the citizens are involved in the decision-making processes. For example, a planning workshop was set up with children. Their task was to develop a new playground in the urban development area "Roscheid V". Or the citizens' forum "Active in old age" gives people the opportunity to get involved in projects - here geared specifically towards senior citizens. The city of Konz was one of 50 cities to qualify for this model project at federal level.

Other investment projects:
A "safe way to school", the development of a children's city map or the project "Social City" , in which the citizens of the Konz-Karthaus district have a say in how their district will develop over the next few years. With the active participation of the Karthauser citizens, a concept for urban renewal and thus for improving the quality of life in Karthaus is currently being developed. Participation in the federal program "Active City Centers" enabled urban renewal measures through public investment, as well as the promotion of private measures.

Groundbreaking resolutions were also passed in the area of climate protection and ecology. In addition to the implementation of a renovation concept for the public buildings of the city, the associated community and the local communities, a climate protection manager was hired and ensured energy improvements. Another puzzle for environmental protection is the renaturation of the streams of the VG. This means that streams take on their natural form again.

In order to cope with the growing population, the city and municipalities have developed numerous building areas since 1984. The new development area Roscheid V on Roscheid represents a special ecological feature. In cooperation with the Trier municipal works, a central combined heat and power plant was built there, which supplies all construction sites with local heat in an economical and environmentally friendly way. The success of this concept was proven by the fact that all building plots were sold in a short time. Therefore, the development of further new building areas is constantly being considered.

Currently, neither the city of Konz nor the local communities have building plots. For this reason, both the city of Konz and the other local communities are naturally striving to identify new building land. However, these methods still need time to be ready for construction.
