Property tax: Deadline extended to January 31, 2023

Do not wait until the end of the deadline - help with the declaration

Around 100 days after the start of the submission of the assessment for the declaration of property tax values (assessment declaration), around 40% of the almost 2.5 million expected declarations were received by the tax offices in Rhineland-Palatinate. In order to give citizens more time to clarify open questions and to prepare the declaration, the submission deadline has now been extended once by 3 months. It ends on January 31, 2023.

However, the State Tax Office recommends that you do not wait until the end of the extended submission period to submit your declaration. In order to be able to use the personal service of the tax administration if questions arise, it is advisable to contact the tax office at an early stage. Based on past experience, it can be assumed that there will be a significantly increased need for information by the end of the period.

The Rhineland-Palatinate tax administration has already provided many answers and help for filing returns, especially in

  • Information letter and filling-in aids (these were sent to owners between May and August) and
  • Extensive information on the tax administration website , eg Questions and answers on the property tax reform (FAQ), click instructions for registering in the ELSTER procedure and for completing the declarations and much more (to be found at: www.fin-rlp.de/grundsteuer ).

If there are any further questions, these can be sent electronically using the contact form available on the website of the tax office. It should be remembered that the file number and contact details should be given.

For telephone inquiries to the tax office, we ask that you only use the telephone numbers given in the information letter on the property tax reform in order to be connected directly to the right contact person. For personal visits, the service centers of the tax offices can be visited without an appointment on Mondays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

According to the law, the declarations must be transmitted electronically. The State Office for Taxes points out that the tax return portal "ELSTER" ( www.elster.de ) contains many useful functions which, for example, provide support when filling out the declaration or enable the declaration data to be checked. In addition, under https://www.grundsteuererklaerung-fuer-privateigentum.de/ Another free application for electronic declaration submission is available.

Persons who are unable to submit the declaration via ELSTER can obtain paper forms from the tax offices or www.fin-rlp.de/vordrucke Complete the published forms for the "Declaration of the determination of the property tax value" and submit them in paper form. Help is also available for these people in the service centers of the tax offices checklists , Sample Statements and Further Brochures.
