You need a passport if you wish to enter a country outside the European Union (EU). A passport allows you to enter many countries worldwide as a tourist without a visa.
If your passport has expired and you still need it, you can apply for a new one.
You cannot extend your passport after it has expired; you must apply for a new one.

Maximum validity of a passport for applicants under 24 years of age: In infants and toddlers, facial features can change so drastically within the validity period that identification with the original passport becomes impossible well before its expiry date, thus rendering the passport invalid prematurely. In this case, you must apply for a new passport well in advance of your trip.
Period of validity: 6 years
Validity of the passport for applicants aged 24 and over: Your passport will become invalid before the date printed on it if: • the personal information entered no longer applies to you or • your passport photo is no longer suitable for clear identification.
Period of validity: 10 years
