You need a passport if you wish to enter a country outside the European Union (EU). In many cases, a passport allows you to enter countries worldwide as a tourist without a visa.

If your passport has expired and you still need it, you can apply for a new one.

You cannot extend your passport within its validity period; you must apply for a new one.

The passport
- is recognized both within and outside the EU,
- It has a chip on which personal data, passport photo and, for persons over 6 years of age, fingerprints are stored.
- It can be applied for by persons of German nationality of any age from birth onwards.

- They possess German citizenship.
- You must be present in person when applying for your passport.
- If you are applying for a passport for your child or a person under your care, that person must also be present when applying.
- If you are applying for a passport for a child under 18 years of age, you must be the legal guardian.
- There must be no grounds for passport refusal. This includes, for example, the assumption that you would endanger yourself by leaving the country.

What documents are required?
- biometric digital passport photo: taken on-site at the authority or by a registered domestic photo service provider
  - Exceptions may apply when applying at German diplomatic missions abroad, and a paper passport photo may be required.

  - Your previous passport
  - temporary passport
  - identity card
  - temporary identity card
  - child passport
- If applicable, your birth certificate
- for children or young people under 18 years of age:
  - Identification documents of the attending legal guardians
  - If applicable, a declaration of consent and a copy of the identification of the absent parent or guardian.
  - Proof of custody, if applicable, if there is only one person with custody.

What deadlines do I need to consider?

Maximum validity of a passport for applicants under 24 years of age: In infants and toddlers, facial features can change so drastically within the validity period that identification with the original passport becomes impossible well before its expiry date, thus rendering the passport invalid prematurely. In this case, you must apply for a new passport well in advance of your trip.

Period of validity: 6 years

Validity of the passport for applicants aged 24 and over: Your passport will become invalid before the date printed on it if: • the personal information entered no longer applies to you or • your passport photo is no longer suitable for clear identification.

Period of validity: 10 years
