Every dog owner is obliged to register their dog.
The obligation to report is regulated in detail in the respective municipal statutes, as is the determination of the dog tax.
A registration obligation of the dog is necessary, among other things,
- in dogs older than three months. They must be identified by a transponder with an identification number
- when acquiring a new dog or moving in with a dog
- in the care or custody of a dog for a period of time resulting from the local dog tax statutes
Please note that more differentiated and supplementary regulations apply to the keeping of so-called dangerous dogs.

After the dog has been registered, dog tax stamps are issued. The dog tax tag must be carried and shown on request.

If you register in person, you must present your current identity card or current confirmation of registration.
The registration form is regularly made available for download on the municipality's website.

What else should I know?
In addition, every dog owner is obliged to keep their dog on a leash on public roads within a town or in areas that are not visible. When outside of a location, leash them immediately if other people approach or become visible.
Violations of the state law on dangerous dogs (LHundeG) can be punished with a fine of up to ten thousand euros. In addition, violations of the municipal statutes can also be punished.
