If you move out of an apartment and do not move into another apartment in Germany, you must deregister.
The most important cases are moving abroad or deregistering a secondary residence.
If you move within Germany, you do not need to deregister. It is sufficient to register with your new municipality.

In the case of persons under the age of 16, care must be taken to ensure that they are de-registered by the persons whose apartment they are moving out of.

If you do not comply with your obligation to deregister or do not do so in good time, you are committing an administrative offense that can be punished with a fine.
What deadlines do I need to consider?
You must deregister with the registration office within two weeks of moving out of your apartment. You can deregister as early as the week before you move out.

You can deregister either in person (appointment at the Citizens Advice Bureau) or in writing. Once you have deregistered, you will receive a confirmation of deregistration.
