Pumped storage power plant in Vianden / Luxembourg
Action group “Lifelong learning, actively passing on knowledge” on an educational trip to the pumped storage power plant in Vianden / Luxembourg
On September 16, 2026, 24 interested people undertook an educational trip to Vianden.
At the pumped-storage power plant, they learned that it serves to store surplus energy and generate peak electricity. The peak electricity is fed into the German RWE grid.
The power plant was located in Vianden, Luxembourg, due to its favorable topographical location amidst the industrial areas of Northwest Europe, its excellent geological conditions, and the low population density in the Our Valley. The state treaty between the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the state of Rhineland-Palatinate was signed in Trier in 1958 and forms the legal basis for the Vianden power plant.
During the tour, the participants asked many questions about the technology and how the power plant worked.
After lunch, some participants explored Vianden Castle, while others followed in Victor Hugo's footsteps at the museum. A few strolled along the Our River in the bright sunshine, enjoying coffee and cake. On the journey home, everyone shared their experiences and agreed, "That was another wonderful and educational day!"
